WBA blast 'unprofessional' PO

Peter Odemwingie: Had a strange day on Thursday

The 31-year-old striker had been a target of QPR throughout January and had repeatedly voiced his displeasure at not being allowed to leave.

However, when he drove to London and addressed a media scrum talking about a move to Rangers, it appeared a deal was on the table.

But Albion quickly released a statement saying Odemwingie was there without permission and QPR admitted the same, saying they had stopped him from getting into their Loftus Road ground.

As a result, a deal was not done, and West Brom have released a statement voicing their displeasure at Odemwingie's behaviour.

It read: "Albion can confirm that no agreement was reached with QPR over the transfer of Peter Odemwingie before the closure of the January window and that the striker remains under contract at The Hawthorns.

"The club were extremely disappointed to witness TV footage of Odemwingie arriving at Loftus Road on Thursday evening despite further talks between the two Barclays Premier League sides proving fruitless. Odemwingie was also never given permission to speak to QPR about a potential move."

Chairman Jeremy Peace added that the matter had become a point of principle and warned Odemwingie that he had to get his head around seeing out the last 18 months of his contract at The Hawthorns.

"The evening's developments have brought a conclusion to what has been an unsavoury affair," he said. "As our sporting and technical director (designate) Richard Garlick has repeatedly said in recent days, we had no need or desire to sell our core players.

"The only way we would have considered letting Peter leave was if an acceptable offer was forthcoming and if we had found a suitable replacement at relatively short notice.

"Neither materialised and, in the end, the matter became a point of principle as much as anything.

"Peter has acted wholly unprofessionally. He must now accept the fact he remains under cont ract for a further 18 months and has to focus on his Albion commitments."

Odemwingie is now faced with going back to West Brom looking for forgiveness, having spent the best part of the last week complaining on Twitter about their refusal to allow him to leave.

He had, though, initially thought that was in the past, telling reporters from his car: "It's fine. West Brom was my home but this is a new chapter. I love West Brom and always will.

"I am optimistic. A few good players have arrived here (at QPR) and I am happy with the trust Harry Redknapp has in me.

"The last few results have given us a chance to stay up. I don't think the owners will bring in so many players if they don't think it will happen.

"I hope West Brom are happy with what they will get and they hope to get players themselves."

Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal defended nervously against Liverpool

The Gunners slipped 2-0 behind at Emirates Stadium after goals from Luis Suarez and Jordan Henderson although they rescued a point thanks to quickfire strikes by Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott.

"It was a great football game where both teams went for it," Wenger said.

"It was entertainment. We could honestly have lost the game but could have won it by three or four goals difference.

"It shows we created many chances going forward but were nervous defensively. The goals we have conceded show we were nervous from the start. Overall we showed great quality in the offensive period."

Asked what was behind the defensive nerves, Wenger added: "Recent history in the big games at home plays a part, you could sense it from outside.

"We have to get rid of that psychological factor when you play at home defensively.

"We have to focus on playing football and what we want to do to the opposition.

"I believe the quality is there and we have to trust it and forget what happened in the past. What happened in the past, you could see it played in our heads at the start of the game."

West Brom boss Steve Clarke admits his team are scratching for a result

Two first-half goals from Leighton Baines - one of them from the penalty spot - were enough for the Toffees at Goodison Park even though Shane Long did pull a goal back after the interval.

Asked how he felt about the game, Clarke told Sky Sports: "Disappointing. It's not been a good start to the year for us. We're scratching a little bit for performances and the results are not coming.

"We're conceding goals. And when you concede two goals in the Premier League and try to chase it to get back...

"We managed to do it against Villa but it was a little too much for us today."

Asked about the penalty on the stroke of half time, Clarke added: "I think it was critical to the shape of the game, the way the game went.

"Everton had a lot of possession first half but they didn't create an awful lot of chances. They scored a good (first) goal from their point of view but a very bad defensive goal from our point of view.

"But if we'd got th e game in at 1-0 with 45 minutes to come out and have a go then we might have got something from it.

"From 2-0 to 2-1 it changes the whole complexion of the game and the whole atmosphere around the place. Obviously we're on the front foot then. We just needed a break and we didn't get it.

"Graham Dorrans' free-kick was a good one but it hit the crossbar and came out and sometimes they are the margins."

The Baggies have not won a game since Boxing Day and Clarke acknowledges that he must review his own decisions in the hope of turning things around.

"We have to work harder and I have to look at myself too," he admitted. "That's always the first port of call, you look at yourself. You look to see what you can do to help your team.

"We'll go out on the training ground and work as hard as we always do and hopefully we can put it right with a good performance and a good home win on Sunday against Tottenham."

Defoe treatment under scrutiny

Jermain Defoe: PRP treatment to speed up healing

The therapy has achieved remarkable results in speeding up recovery from injuries and in some cases has led to athletes making a comeback after having retired due to injury.

WADA banned PRP injections in 2010 but this ban was removed a year later, although the use of isolated growth factors remain prohibited.

The technique involves a small quantity of blood being extracted from the patient, placed in a centrifuge and spun until it separates into its component parts.

The platelets are then injected back into the patient at the point of injury. The growth factors in platelets are believed to speed up healing, but it remains prohibited to isolate those growth factors and administer them directly.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas revealed the club has been using the treatment since the start of the season.

He said: "We believe a lot in [non-isolated] growth factor treatment and plasma platelet treatments. It is not common but does happen fr om club to club.

"You take out the blood from any part of the body and spin it around. The plasma comes to the top of the blood and you are able to inject it back into the body and that is the part of the blood that heals injuries. It accelerates the recovery process."

UK Anti-Doping confirmed the treatment was acceptable.

A UKAD statement read: "Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous blood product used to treat acute and chronic tendon, ligament and muscle injuries.

"WADA banned intramuscular PRP injections in competitive athletes in 2010 but this was removed in 2011 because of limited evidence for a systemic ergogenic effect of PRP, but the growth factors within PRP remain prohibited."

El Ghanassy heads to Heerenveen

Yassine El Ghanassy: Heerenveen switch

El Ghanassy has joined Heerenveen for the remainder of the season.

The 22-year-old winger linked up with Albion on a season-long loan last summer but has been limited to three cup appearances.

The Baggies have been given permission by El Ghanassy's parent club to loan him on to Heerenveen, although they retain their option to make the Belgium international's move permanent.

Albion sporting and technical director, Richard Garlick said: "Due to the team's progress this season, Yassine has found first-team chances hard to come by.

"We feel it is in everyone's best interests to allow Yassine to go out on loan and get some games under his belt."

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas says Lewis Holtby is 'bargain of the century'

Lewis Holtby: New Tottenham signing has been likened to Rafael van der Vaart

Holtby had been expected to make the move to White Hart Lane in the summer but Spurs have pushed through the deal early after reaching an agreement with Schalke.

He has cost a reported 1.5million and Villas-Boas thinks that represents a wonderful piece of business, while he says the 22-year-old's versatility will stand him in good stead.

"Is he the bargain of the century? I think so because it's difficult to find a young player who is running his contract down and we faced tough competition," Villas-Boas said in the Daily Star.

"He's recognised as an exceptional young talent and we have high expectations of the player.

"Because of his creativity you can compare him to Rafa - to a certain extent anyway because Rafa was a greatly experienced player when he joined and Lewis has all his career ahead of him.

"He will fill the No.10 position, although he can play on the right or the left and he has also played in a holding role."

Holtby could make his Tottenham debut in Wednesday's Premier League game against Norwich City.

Villas-Boas said: "He's been selected. Is he ready to go straight in? It depends, but his English background can help him and he knows the culture and the language very well."

Pardew enthused by Sissoko

Moussa Sissoko: Impressive debut

Sissoko, a 2million capture from Toulouse, set up the opening goal for Papiss Cisse with a perfectly weighted pass and generally impressed in his central midfield slot.

Yohan Cabaye's stunning 20-yard strike increased the Magpies' lead before the break and all Villa could manage during a stirring second-half fightback was Christian Benteke's penalty.

Pardew, who also gave a debut to another French player in Yoan Gouffran, was surprised at how quickly the newcomers slotted in as Newcastle chalked up their first away win of 2012-2013.

He said: "When you are looking for players and trying to find the secret ingredient for your team, it's not always easy for players to come and fit in as they did in the first half.

"I was a little bit surprised myself if I'm honest. I don't think we would have won the game without Sissoko. That's how important I think that signing was.

"Sissoko really grabbed the game by the horns and that's what we nee ded.

"With Demba Ba departing from a team that hasn't been winning, it was a big blow for us and we really needed him for this game."

Pardew added: "We have worked really hard on integrating the new players into things.

"They are not here to save us, they are here to help us. That was my message to the established players.

"We had a nice night in the hotel the night before the game, a nice meeting, and you sensed there was a good feeling amongst them all.

"It was a terrific day for us because we were under a lot of pressure to win at Villa."

Villa have dropped into the bottom three for the third time this season despite dominating the second period and have taken only two points from the last seven games.

Manager Paul Lambert accepts his side cannot afford perform like in the first half.

He said: "We paid the price for starting too slowly. We just never got going in the first half. The second half, that's the way to pla y football.

"The first goal was really disappointing; the second goal, you sometimes can't stop them - it was a terrific strike - and then you are facing an uphill battle.

"But I couldn't fault them for the way they played in the second half. It is the first time I've seen a standing ovation when you've been beaten, especially at home.

"I just said to the players 'you can't play like that in the first half and turn that performance in during the second half'.

"It is sometimes easier to play when you are 2-0 down because no-one expects anything then. You've got to start like that - and we never started."

Roberto Mancini confirms Mario Balotelli exit but cools talk of a replacement

Much of the talk prior to City's Premier League clash with QPR at Loftus Road on Tuesday surrounded Balotelli, who was reportedly closing in on a move to AC Milan.

Speaking after the game, which ended 0-0, Mancini confirmed the controversial forward was close to leaving but played down talk of an imminent replacement.

"Both clubs are talking about him," Mancini told Sky Sports. "I think maybe tomorrow they conclude. I think that Mario is due for a medical.

"We are very sorry because we love Mario. But I think that he had this big chance to go back to Italy and to play for another top club like Milan."

When asked about any potential replacements, Mancini revealed that discussions over the sale of Balotelli only began 48 hours ago, leaving precious little time for further deals.

He added: "Four days ago we didn't have nothing, but the last two days we have started to talk about this [Balotelli's transfer].

"I don't know [about a replacement], we have three strikers, we will see, we only have two days it is difficult to get the player now."

Speaking about the game, Mancini praised QPR for their battling display, singling out goalkeeper Julio Cesar - who played under Mancini at Inter - after the Brazilian made a number of key saves to deny the Premier League champions.

"Julio is one of the top keepers in the world and he saved his team and I'm very happy for him because I know him very well but I'm very frustrated for us," he said.

"I think that now QPR is a different team, they don't concede a lot of space, it is difficult to play against them now because they play with 10 players behind the ball, if you don't score or find a good solution like we had today in the first half it's difficult.

"We missed a good chance tonight. We played well, we didn't concede, but in football you need to score."

David Beckham is training with Arsenal but is unlikely to sign for the club

David Beckham: Training with Arsenal

Beckham is currently without a club after leaving Los Angeles Galaxy at the end of the Major League Soccer season and has told Wenger he has not trained since.

The Frenchman is unsure of Beckham's state of fitness, but believes the 37-year-old would not have taken an extended break if he wanted to win a contract with the Gunners or any Premier League side.

"He told me that he doesn't look at all to be in shape," Wenger said. "Beckham is super-ambitious. If, in his mind, he wanted to play in the Premier League he would not have gone on holiday.

"He would have prepared and come in and tried to impress me. He told me he has done nothing at all."

It is still to be determined whether, and where, Beckham will continue his career.

Wenger declined to speculate on whether Beckham could still perform in England's top flight and insisted a permanent deal for the former Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy and AC Milan midfielder is not un der consideration.

"That is not on the agenda," Wenger said. "He asked to come here to get fit. (It's) purely for fitness. There's no speculation about signing or anything.

"Maybe in June he has plans to play somewhere."

Beckham called Wenger to request a third spell training at London Colney after previous stints in January 2008 and December 2010, which came before a lengthier spell with Tottenham in January 2011.

Former Gunners Thierry Henry and Sol Campbell have also returned to the club for training periods and Wenger believes Beckham sets a good example to his young squad.

"He's fantastic," Wenger added. "The young English players look at him and take his advice on board. His positive advice.

"This guy has a fantastic quality, has done the maximum of his career that you can do. Why? Because he loves football. After training he stays and plays."

Hutton seals Mallorca loan

Alan Hutton: Moved to Spain

The Scotland international has joined the Primera Division club until the end of the season, having not featured for Villa this term.

Hutton moved to Villa Park in 2011 from Tottenham in a deal thought to be worth 3million and although he was a regular under Alex McLeish last season, he largely underperformed and has not found favour with McLeish's successor Paul Lambert.

Former Rangers right-back Hutton is hoping to impress in Spain, with the initial loan having been agreed with a view to a permanent deal in the summer.

Hutton said at his presentation on Tuesday, according to Mallorca's website: "I hope to give all I have to offer. I am very excited to come to this club. I was very excited to be able to come to play in Spain.

"For me it is a new project, a new league, a new country, and I have come with lots of knowledge because I've been able to speak with players I know.

"I knew about the interest from Mallorca about two months a go, and from then on I told my agent it was my first and only choice."

Manchester United v Southampton: Robin van Persie set for recall

Robin van Persie: Set to return to Manchester United's starting line-up

Skipper Nemanja Vidic and central defensive partner Rio Ferdinand are also set to be included for the Old Trafford encounter.

However, winger Ashley Young (knee) and defender Jonny Evans (hamstring) remain sidelined.

Southampton could welcome club captain Adam Lallana back into their side.

Saints' boss Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed Lallana trained with the squad during a trip to Barcelona and is in contention to be involved at Old Trafford after missing almost two months with knee ligament damage.

Jose Fonte and Guly Do Prado (both knee) are absent, but new signing Vegard Forren is in line to make his debut.

Transfer news: Mario Balotelli prepared to take pay cut to join AC Milan

Mario Balotelli: Deal close, according to Sky Italia

Manchester City remain in talks with Milan and their Serie A rivals Juventus over a deal for the Italy striker but have so far refused to drop their asking price.

Milan are not budging either and it has fallen to Balotelli to break the impasse with an offer to lower his salary demands.

Valentina Fass of Sky Italia told Sky Sports News: "They have found an agreement on Balotelli's salary.

"He was due to get 5m euros net a year plus bonuses, but the problem is the transfer fee. City want a higher amount while AC Milan doesn't want to give more than 20m euros.

"They're trying to discuss details and are very close to closing the deal, so it really looks like Balotelli will be coming to Milan.

"It's even more likely now because Balotelli has offered to reduce his salary to 4m euros a year. This will probably mean they'll be able to close the deal because the difference between what City want and what Milan want to give is 2-3m euros.

"It looks like Mario himself is trying to make the deal happen."

Toffees & Cottagers chase Igor

Igor De Camargo: Wanted by Premier League pair

The 29-year-old Brazilian-born striker is set to leave German club Borussia Monchengladbach, where he has slipped down the pecking order.

Now Everton and Fulham have emerged as suitors for the player - who joined Gladbach from Standard Liege in 2010.

De Camargo has 18 months left on his current deal, but the German side are now listening to offers for the player.

Talking exclusively to Sky Sports, Eberl confirmed: "Igor de Camargo is actually discussing a transfer as he is no first-team regular at our club.

"Lately we have been receiving several enquiries from clubs around Europe, I am able to confirm there is interest from Premiership clubs in his services."

The player's agent Stefani also revealed that talks were ongoing with Everton and Fulham - but he also added there was interest from elsewhere.

"Nothing is decided," he said. "We have talked with Everton and also with Fulham, and we will talk again - but we do not know w hat will happen, there are other clubs too.

"We have talked with teams in Germany also, and hopefully we will know more soon."

Transfer news: Manchester City 'in talks' over Mario Balotelli with AC Milan

Mario Balotelli: Has made just two appearances for Manchester City this year

Roberto Mancini has consistently rubbished speculation linking Balotelli with a return to Italy, and as recently as Monday morning Mancini's assistant David Platt played down the prospect of a deal before Thursday's transfer deadline.

But the latest reports from Italy suggest Milan have made a breakthrough in their attempts to sign the striker.

There has been no official comment from City, and even Platt was in the dark when he stood in for Mancini at a press conference ahead of Tuesday's trip to QPR.

He said: "We've three days left before the deadline, but I haven't heard anything, to be honest. It's speculation.

"It's a shame Robbie's not here, because he might know a lot more than me. As far as we're concerned, he's still a Manchester City player. I'm not aware of any negotiation."

Balotelli, who previously played for Milan's rivals Inter, was labelled a "bad apple" by the club's owner Silvio Berlusconi earlier this season after a series of disciplinary problems during his two-and-a-half-years in England.

But neither that outburst, nor Berlusconi's claim last week that the 22-year-old is out of Milan's price range, has killed off talk of an imminent deal.

Milan keen to sign Balotelli

Mario Balotelli: Talks are understood to be continuing between Milan and Man Cit

While no formal offer has been made, it is believed that talks are continuing between both clubs and Balotelli's agent.

Manchester City have maintained throughout this window that Balotelli will not be sold in January.

The Italian has regularly been linked with a move back to his homeland since arriving at City in the summer of 2010, and Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri was questioned on his interest in the striker after side's 1-0 victory over Atalanta on Sunday.

Allegri was reluctant to discuss another club's player but admitted he was an admirer and indicated that Balotelli's controversial character would not be a problem.

"Balotelli? I won't think about him because he is a Manchester City player," Allegri told Sky Italia.

"If he arrives here, then I'll consider how to approach him. Obviously, I wouldn't say no.

"We are setting up a good, disciplined group and that is important in a difficult League like Serie A."

Transfer news: Inter Milan ready for Philippe Coutinho to exit for Liverpool

Philippe Coutinho: Will have a great opportunity in the Premier League, accordin

It emerged earlier this week that the Reds were closing in on a move for the winger after agreeing a fee with the Serie A club.

And it appears Inter are already planning for the future without Coutinho after Moratti confirmed that they would look to use the money from his sale to strengthen the squad.

He told Sky Italia: "The deal for Coutinho to Liverpool is an opportunity both for Inter and both for the player.

"We could be happy with the economic proposal and Coutinho could find the space he hasn't here. And then we'll have the opportunity to reinforce the team".

If the deal is completed, Coutinho would become the club's second signing of this transfer window following the 12million capture of Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea.

Coutinho came through the youth system at Vasco da Gama before joining Inter at the age of 18.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Espanyol, where he worked with new Southampton manager M auricio Pochettino.

Pochettino's recent appointment at Saints led to speculation linking Coutinho with the South Coast club but it is understand he has expressed a preference for Anfield.

Transfer News: Reading make bid for Blackpool winger Tom Ince

Tom Ince: Reading have made a bid for Blackpool winger

Ince has been strongly linked with a return to his former club Liverpool, who have previously seen an offer for the player rejected by Blackpool.

Swansea City have also been mooted as admirers of the England Under-21 international, but now Reading are hoping to steal a march on their rivals.

It is understood that the Premier League strugglers have offered a fee in the region of 7million-8million for a player who scored twice in Blackpool's win at Wolves on Saturday.

Speaking after the game at Molineux, Blackpool's caretaker manager Steve Thompson confirmed that Ince would not be allowed to leave the club on the cheap.

Thompson said: "I have heard the speculation but everything has a price. You see certain players going for big money and he is just as good as them.

"So if he is going to go, he is not going to go cheap. He is a special talent. If Tom goes, he goes, and he has earned it because he has been fantastic.

"He is stil l a little baby really and still has a lot to learn. But he has an end product and goals. If someone comes in they will get a special player but we are not going to give special players away for cheap at Blackpool."

Odemwingie in Twitter outburst

Peter Odemwingie: Time at West Brom coming to an end with QPR interested

Odemwingie has followed up the statement he issued last night by claiming he wants to leave because the Baggies had previously doubted his commitment.

The Nigeria international is a target for QPR and yesterday had a transfer request rejected by Albion.

Rangers have already had a 2 million bid turned down but sources close to West Brom expect them to make another offer before the transfer window closes on Thursday.

Odemwingie has come under fire from some Albion fans after making clear his desire to leave.

He tweeted: "I can understand the reaction of few Albion fans on my desire to leave the club. Real reason? Cos they once doubted my commitment.

"Want to know why I wanted to quit top flight football last summer earlier than I wished to? They know at the club.

"Albion fans are not the only reason, but made it easier for me to decide to stay and try my best to forget about the disappointment.

"I succeeded in doing that . But it's not getting better. Before bigger disappointment comes one day, I better leave on a good note."

Odemwingie admits his agent advised him not to make the Twitter outburst.

He added: "I am crazy haha adviser text saying don't tweet, it weakens our position. Doesn't weaken nothing ! When I want to do something, I Do it."

In his original statement, released after his transfer request being rejected, Odemwingie said: "I'm deeply hurt and in some ways offended by the lack of reciprocal common respect from the management of West Bromwich Albion.

"During my time at the club I believe I have delivered performances, effort and goals.

"I never complained when I found out that the club failed to inform me of enquiries that might have interested me and my family in the past.

"Everyone knows how much effort and commitment I always give when I play for the club. The fans have been great with me and I will always respect them.

"At t his stage of my career, this opportunity may not come around again. A new challenge, a new opportunity, and a chance to play under the stewardship of one of the most respected managers in the game (Harry Redknapp)."

Bastia say they have rejected Newcastle's offer for Florian Thauvin

Florian Thauvin: Bastia midfielder a target for Arsenal and Newcastle

Newcastle have been busy bolstering their French contingent during the January transfer window and have held a long-standing interest in Thauvin.

The France youth international, who turned 20 on Saturday, has 18 months left on his contract and Bastia say he does not intend to sign an extension.

Geronimi has stated that Newcastle are the only club to have made an offer for Thauvin, but that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been in contact about the player.

"Florian Thauvin has been the object of just one concrete offer so far, from Newcastle, for 3million (2.6m), but we refused it," Geronimi told France Bleu radio station.

"However, he didn't want to prolong his contract with Bastia, but he will stay until the end of the season."

Regarding Arsenal's interest, Geronimi added: "We have not received any firm offer from Arsenal and, thus, there is no question of the 5m (4.3m) reported.

"This week I have had Arsene Wenger on the p hone twice. He expressed his interest in the player to us, but it has not gone beyond that."

Wigan forward Mauro Boselli agrees loan switch to Serie A side Palermo

Mauro Boselli: Linking up with Sicilian outfit Palermo

The Argentine striker has endured a difficult stay with the Latics since arriving in a deal believed to be worth in excess of 6million in 2010 and is still waiting for his first Premier League goal.

The 27-year-old has been loaned out to Genoa and Estudiantes in that time and is now to return to Italy with Serie A side Palermo.

Martinez revealed that the deal had been finalised in his post-match press conference following Wigan's 1-0 win at Macclesfield in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

"We agreed a loan deal with Palermo and Mauro will go back to Italy where he had a spell with Genoa until the end of the season," said the Spaniard.

"That was done this morning and that is the reason why he wasn't in the squad."

Rafa demands CL qualification

Rafael Benitez: Thinks a top-four finish is more important than trophies

Benitez arrived at Stamford Bridge in November determined to land some silverware during his spell as interim manager.

But he has instead watched one piece after another slip from his grasp in the midst of a campaign in which Chelsea have competed on an unprecedented number of fronts.

Two trophies could vanish in the space of five days if they follow up Wednesday's Capital One Cup exit with an FA Cup fourth-round shock defeat at Brentford on Sunday.

But despite no Chelsea manager having survived the axe at the end of a barren season since Roman Abramovich bought the club, Benitez left little doubt what the Russian expected of him.

He said: "My idea is very clear. We have to be in the top four in terms of doing well and try to progress in the other competitions.

"But not just to get the job. It's just what we have to do."

He added: "We want to win every game, we want to win every trophy available.

"The FA Cup is our nex t target, we will try to do it.

"The priority is very clear. Finish in the top four and try to progress and try to go, as much as we can, to the final or to the semi-final.

"The most important thing, to be in the Champions League next year."

An FA Cup exit against npower League One opponents would certainly not be considered progress in a competition Chelsea have won an amazing four times in six years, including last season.

Benitez said: "As a top side, you have to win. And you play against a team in another division, so you have to win."

Benitez knows all about cup shocks from his time at Liverpool, who suffered ignominious exits at the hands of Burnley, Barnsley and Reading during his six years in charge.

Almost invariably, they would occur when the Spaniard rested several key players, something he was also considering doing tomorrow after admitting yesterday some of Chelsea's slimline squad were running on empty.

Defending the rotation policy which will likely see recalls for Paulo Ferreira and Ryan Bertrand in addition to John Terry, Benitez said: "You can make one mistake in one game.

"It does not mean that the approach is not good enough."

The last time Benitez made sweeping changes, Chelsea crashed to defeat in a west London derby, with QPR winning 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Benitez believes the Brentford game would be "totally different" on a pitch that was "not the best".

He added: "But it's a game that you will play against a team that is close and it will be a massive, massive motivation for them too."

Like Chelsea, Brentford lie third in their own division.

Benitez said: "I have seen some games and I was talking with the scout.

"They can play in different ways. They can switch.

"They can play long, they can try to win second balls.

"So, quite an interesting team and they are doing well."

Benitez also insisted Chelsea were heading in the right direction under his leadership, despite their succession of high-profile flops.

"I have analysed things we have done well and wrong and still I think we are on the right path," he said.

"The question is obviously, as I say, one game can make a big difference.

"But in terms of preparation and improvement of the team, I think we are going in the right direction."

The Spaniard has been heavily linked with a job swap with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who is reportedly set to leave Real Madrid this summer.

Benitez would not be drawn, saying: "I'm really pleased to be here because it's a top side and I can work with good staff and good players, top-class players, and that is what I like to do, to challenge for trophies.

"Can you win? It is my experience that sometimes you can do everything right and still you will lose a final or a semi-final."

Newcastle made a failed bid to sign Saint-Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: Attracted interest from Newcastle

The 23-year-old Gabon international has attracted interest from the Magpies after scoring eight goals in Ligue 1 this season and Aubameyang fuelled speculation about his future by declaring his desire to leave in the summer.

Newcastle have already raided French clubs to sign Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Yoan Gouffran, Massadio Haidara and Moussa Sissoko in January, but St Etienne insist Aubameyang will not leave this month.

A club statement suggested that Newcastle were not the only side hunting Aubameyang's signature.

It read: "Following the rumours that have appeared in the media linking Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with a move to Newcastle, AS Saint-Etienne wish to make clear that the player, his agent and the club have collectively agreed to refuse all offers made thus far."

Aubameyang, has helped his team reach the final of the League Cup, where they will face Rennes at the Stade de France in April.

Fergie: United paying penalty

Wayne Rooney: Mixed fortunes from the spot

Wayne Rooney missed his 10th spot-kick for Manchester United in the FA Cup third-round replay with West Ham earlier this month.

Whilst Ferguson does not believe Rooney will suffer any psychological trauma from his most recent failure, it is widely assumed the job of penalty taker has now been passed on to Robin van Persie.

However, Ferguson also feels there is a wider issue that demands improvement.

"You can certainly criticise Wayne as that was his 10th miss from the spot, but at the same time I must point out missing a penalty does not faze him," Ferguson told United Review.

"Other players with different temperaments could go to pieces.

"It's a particular art. The Germans are good, especially in internationals and big competitions, and I think they practice, unlike in England - it seems we either can't be bothered - perhaps players see it as boring, or as if we regard it as almost cheating.

"We will really have to up our ga me in this area."

Mario Balotelli's agent has refused to rule out a move away from Manchester City

Mario Balotelli: Still being linked with a move away from Manchester City

The striker was not involved in City's FA Cup win over Stoke on Saturday, fuelling more speculation over the Italy international's long-term future at the Etihad Stadium.

City manager Roberto Mancini insisted on Friday that Balotelli was staying at the club despite being continually linked with a move to AC Milan.

However, Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has left the door open for a possible move for Balotelli after ruling out deals for Real Madrid's Kaka and Didier Drogba.

"Kaka and Drogba are 101% not coming to Milan. Balotelli? He is 99.9%..." Galliani told milannews.it

It has been suggested Milan would like to sign Balotelli on loan, but the player's agent Mino Raiola has revealed City's hierarchy have ruled out the possibility of a temporary switch.

"The truth about Mario? You have to ask to others, because I cannot say it," Raiola told Radio Deejay.

"Until January 31, anything can happen, we are monitoring . We have not talked about money because there is nothing concrete yet.

"But I can rule out the loan, the City directors do not accept this solution. Also because they received a 40million (34m) offer for Mario during the European Championship."

Steven Gerrard lauds manager Brendan Rodgers' mettle

Steven Gerrard backing Brendan Rodgers to succeed

Rodgers took over at Anfield eight months ago, following two years of success as Swansea boss, that saw him lead the Welsh club into the Premier League and receive plaudits for their possession-based style of play.

It was this that prompted Reds owners John Henry and Tom Werner to make their move for the 39-year-old Northern Irishman and Gerrard believes they will ultimately be rewarded with success.

"He gave up a top job in a comfortable situation at Swansea, where he'd done fantastically well, and had the bottle and the character to come and take this big job on," said Gerrard.

"Our fans demand that we are successful and that we win and if you are looking for a young manager out there who has everything going for him who can help us achieve that success I think you pick Brendan Rodgers.

"Now the responsibility and the pressure is shared with the likes of myself and Jamie (Carragher) because it is a tough club as well with the demands and expectations on a daily basis."

The Reds have been inconsistent so far this season and currently lie seventh in the Premier League table, but beat Norwich 5-0 in their last match and this weekend take on Oldham in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Toon tie up capture of Sissoko

Moussa Sissoko: Snapped up by Newcastle

The 23-year-old midfielder is the club's fourth signing of the week and the latest Frenchman to move to St James' Park.

Having made 218 appearances for Toulouse, his only club, Sissoko has signed a six-and-a-half-year deal with Alan Pardew's side.

A six-cap France international, he said: "I am delighted to be a Newcastle United player.

"This is a massive club playing in the best league in the world, and I believe my style of play is suited to the Premier League.

"I have heard lots about how fantastic the Newcastle supporters are and cannot wait to get started.

"I am rising to a new challenge by coming here and want to firstly help the team improve this season and then progress after that."

Sissoko's signing comes at the end of a day during which Pardew was boosted by wantaway captain Fabricio Coloccini's decision to remain with the club until the end of the season at least.

"This transfer window has proved very product ive for us and Moussa arriving today is a massive plus for the club," Pardew said.

"He will bring drive and energy to the squad, he is a winner and that's why I'm especially pleased to have him with us.

"What all our signings this window bring is essential competition for places and that is great for the remainder of the season."

Sissoko joins compatriots Yoan Gouffran, Massadio Haidara and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa in joining this week, while Mathieu Debuchy signed on January 4.

Zaha signs deal after medical

Wilfried Zaha: Will link up with United in July

The 20-year-old forward is to be loaned straight back to his former club, Championship promotion-chasers Crystal Palace, before linking up with United in July.

Zaha came through the youth academy at Crystal Palace and has scored 15 goals in 124 appearances for the Eagles since he was given a debut against Cardiff in March 2010.

A skilful, pacy forward who can play on the wing or as a striker, Zaha made his England debut as a substitute against Sweden last November.

United are believed to be paying around 10million up front for his services, with the fee potentially rising to 15million if certain conditions are met.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "As we like to do, we sign young players with potential. We can also develop players well here, that's proved to be the case many times.

"Hopefully the boy will enjoy it coming here, when he eventually does join us in the summer."

Zaha said: "I am delighted to be joini ng Manchester United and ending the recent speculation.

"I would like to thank the owners at Palace for making the move possible. However, my focus for the next five months will be solely at Crystal Palace.

"I have been at Palace for more than 10 years, I will always love the club, and I want to help get them get back to the Premier League, particularly for the fans who have always been so good to me."

And Crystal Palace co-chairman Steve Parish said: "I feel this is a great deal for the club and the player. We would like to thank Wilf for all he has done for the club and we all wish him well when he joins Manchester United in the summer.

"It was essential to Wilf and ourselves that he stayed at Palace for the remainder of this season, to help the club with its main aim of promotion to the Premier League."

Frimpong joins Fulham on loan

Emmanuel Frimpong: Has joined Fulham on loan

The Cottagers revealed the move for the 21-year-old midfielder on their official Twitter feed, with Frimpong also acknowledging it by writing: "Fulham here I come."

Frimpong has been with Arsenal since he was nine but did not make his Premier League debut until August 2011 after a succession of injuries.

Fitness problems also cut short a loan spell with Wolves last season, with Frimpong needing surgery after rupturing knee ligaments against QPR.

He went on loan to Charlton at the end of 2012 and will now see out the season with Martin Jol's men.

Odemwingie pleads for release

Peter Odemwingie: Wants to wave goodbye to the Baggies

The Premier League's bottom side QPR had a bid for the 31-year-old turned down earlier this month but it was understood that Odemwingie was keen to discuss the move.

He has now put in an official transfer request in an attempt to facilitate his departure but it has been turned down by the Baggies.

Albion's sporting and technical director Richard Garlick said: "Peter is hugely popular with our supporters and it is disappointing that he has decided to hand in a transfer request.

"It was immediately turned down and has done nothing to change our stance during January. Peter is under contract until the summer of 2014 and we have no need or desire to sell our core players.

"We want to keep the squad intact to enable us to build on an encouraging first six months of the season."

Odemwingie has responded with a long statement which read: "I'm deeply hurt and in some ways offended by the lack of reciprocal common respect from the management of West Bromwich Albion.

"Some may say I have contributed, along with all my team mates, to the survival of the club in the Premier League in recent seasons.

"At this stage of my career, this opportunity may not come around again. A new challenge, a new opportunity, and a chance to play under the stewardship of one of the most respected managers in the game (Harry Redknapp).

"I hope the management of West Bromwich Albion will accept my transfer request in the manner that I have requested it.

"West Bromwich Albion may argue that I am too vital a member o f the team to allow me to leave now but I could argue that team selection so far this season has not reflected that and there is more than adequate cover for my position currently in the squad, culminating in my playing out of position.

"I have not taken this decision lightly and I would like West Bromwich Albion to accept what, in my opinion, is more than a reasonable offer from QPR for me."

Odemwingie arrived at West Brom in 2010 and has scored 30 goals in 80 appearances for the Baggies.

Coloccini staying with Magpies

Fabricio Coloccini: Decided to stay

After days of delicate negotiation following the 31-year-old defender's request to be allowed to return to Argentina because of personal problems, he has agreed to stay on Tyneside and will continue as skipper.

Manager Alan Pardew said: "Coloccini is going to stay with us and will remain as captain, which is fantastic news for us.

"We have managed to persuade him that, as much as his family, we need him. He has shown fantastic loyalty to come and play and see us through to the summer at the very least."

Friday's news came as a huge boost to Pardew during a week in which the relegation-threatened Magpies have added three more players to their squad following the earlier capture of Mathieu Debuchy.

It began with Coloccini's advisors travelling to Tyneside in an attempt to release him from the new four-year contract he signed just last season, as request which was never likely to be accepted.

Newcastle have no game this weekend after g oing out of the FA Cup at Brighton, but will resume against fellow strugglers Aston Villa in the Premier League on Tuesday evening.

Harry hopes to delay Nelsen exit

Ryan Nelsen: To become the next Toronto FC manager

Nelsen has been appointed head coach of Toronto FC and the Major League Soccer club expect him to start work on February 1, ensuring Tuesday's Premier League clash with Manchester City will be his final game for Rangers.

When the 35-year-old announced at the start of the month that he would be leaving, Redknapp expected to keep a player he values highly until the latter stages of their relegation battle.

While he is resigned to losing him far sooner, he wants the New Zealand international to be available for the crucial showdown with Norwich at Loftus Road on February 2.

"I need to speak to Ryan, I need him here for the Norwich game," said Redknapp, who revealed Nelsen will be rested for Saturday's FA Cup tie against MK Dons.

"I thought we were talking March 1 when I spoke to Ryan last. Suddenly this has all changed. I'm hoping we can put it back a few days.

"He's been away all week in Canada doing some work for his new club I need him next week - we're desperately short and I need Ryan to play.

"He's got a job to go to and wants to crack on with that. He felt it's an opportunity that may never come along for him again.

"I can understand where he's coming from because it's his future, but I wish he was staying because there haven't been too many better players than him here this year."

Striker Loic Remy and defender Tal Ben Haim have been the only arrivals during an otherwise frustrating transfer window that has seen Redknapp miss out on several targets.

Porto defender Rolando is currently on Redknapp's radar, while a deal for and Chunnam Dragons' South Korean international Yun Suk-young is close to being completed, but neither goalkeeper Julio Cesar nor centre-back Anton Ferdinand will be leaving.

"I've been travelling all over the place, it's been busy. It's difficult. I've taken lots of flights but it's been very hard to actually land anyone," Redknapp said.

"I've been around Europe every day and haven't been home for 12 days. My wife said to me the other day 'I've forgotten what you look like'. I told her I look like Paul Newman, she said 'in your dreams'!

"You think you've got someone and then something else happens and you don't get the player. I'm chasing here, chasing there, and coming up with nothing.

"That's how it's been for the last few weeks and the clock's ticking down now. If we don't get the people I want and a bit of quality, we'll sit tight.

"We got Remy and that was great for us, but we need to strengthen and that's an obvious fact.

"We're still bottom of the league. We've been on a decent run, but we had an horrendous start.

"I still fancy us to get out of this position, but to do that we do need to strengthen a bit."

Redknapp will play a weakened team against npower League One club MK Dons.

"You want to keep winning, that is the key. We've had a five-game unbeat en run and want to continue that," he said.

"But we have Manchester City on Tuesday and Norwich the following Saturday, so the squad will get used tomorrow, and that's no disrespect to MK Dons."

Kagawa unhappy with form

Shinji Kagawa: Is unhappy with current form

The 23-year-old joined United from German champions Borussia Dortmund in the off-season and has failed to reach the heights he did during his tenure at Signal Iduna Park.

The Japan International, who reportedly cost the Red Devils 17million, was substituted early in the second half in the dramatic 1-1 draw with Spurs at the weekend after another sub-par showing in a red shirt.

"I'm really feeling that I need to perform better," he told the Daily Mirror. "I'm not satisfied with what I have done here at all.

"It's a big and really famous club in the world and I need to overcome lots of pressures and be mentally stronger."

"Unfortunately I got injured, but I have to be better and grow as a player a person, in terms of contributing to team's wins and succeeding here."

Norwich target van Wolfswinkel

Ricky van Wolfswinkel: A target for Norwich City

Norwich boss Chris Hughton is in the market for a new striker and has made bids for Celtic's Gary Hooper and Swansea's Danny Graham.

Hughton has been frustrated in his attempts to land either Hooper or Graham and he is now thought to have turned his attentions to Dutch ace van Wolfswinkel.

Van Wolfswinkel has been linked with a move to England and the Premier League for some time with the likes of Tottenham, Liverpool and Newcastle all credited with an interest in the player.

The 23-year-old has impressed for Sporting since his arrival from Fc Utrecht in the summer of 2011.

However, with Sporting struggling in eighth spot in the Portuguese Primera Liga they could face a fight to keep hold of him during this month's transfer window.

Hughton is keen to bring in a proven striker and he is hoping to be given the backing to strike a deal for van Wolfswinkel in what would be a major coup for Norwich.

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel backs under-fire David de Gea

David de Gea: Beaten by Tottenham's Clint Dempsey in stoppage-time on Sunday

De Gea was criticised for a punch that eventually allowed Clint Dempsey to snatch an injury-time equaliser for Tottenham last weekend.

But Schmeichel, who made almost 300 appearances for the Old Trafford club, believes Sir Alex Ferguson's side would have lost the White Hart Lane contest had it not been for the Spaniard, pointing the finger instead at those in front of him.

"It is very easy to claim De Gea is to blame," said Schmeichel.

"I disagree. I think if De Gea had not played the way he did we would have lost 4-1.

"We played in a way that required the goalkeeper to make saves. He did that. He did his job. Nobody is highlighting that.

"My point is that if you are not that deep, we are not conceding those chances. That is the thing I would work on.

"In general, the way to win championships is not by defending as deeply as we did for the final hour on Sunday.

"For the goal, David does all the right things. He got a f ist to it under pressure but, unfortunately, the ball ends up with a Spurs player.

"We should be further up the pitch. If that starts with the goalkeeper, he needs to work on that, but we need them to be brave enough to take them out."

Newcastle complete Haidara deal

Massadio Haidara: Newcastle new boy

Haidara has signed a five-and-a-half year contract at St James' Park.

He said: "It was the desire of the club to sign me up which was the most important factor.

"It was nothing to do with the league position. It was really all about the club's desire and willingness to sign me up.

"Also, I like the club's ambition to strengthen the whole team so we can improve our league position. That's what appealed to me, so I didn't hesitate."

Toon boss Alan Pardew added: "Massadio is very highly thought of in France and he's somebody who our scouting team have been greatly impressed by.

"At the age of 20, he will only continue to get better but he's already played a lot of games in his country's top division and represented France at under-19, under-20 and under-21 level.

"He's strong and quick and we're looking forward to seeing him develop here."

Yoan Gouffran, meanwhile, has embarked upon his Newcastle career confident relegati on is not on the agenda.

The 26-year-old striker signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at St James' Park after completing a move for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of 1.4million, from Bordeaux.

He arrived with the Magpies sitting just two points clear of the bottom three and facing a big game at fellow strugglers Aston Villa on Tuesday evening.

However, Gouffran, who became Alan Pardew's third January signing after compatriots Mathieu Debuchy and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, is not at all concerned that that situation will persist.

He said: "I am not worried at all. I know the players who play here at Newcastle already. They are fantastic players.

"Newcastle isn't in the position it should be in the league. Whether it's myself or the other players in the team, we are going to try our utmost to make sure we can climb up the league to where we should be.

"I think with the players Newcastle have, we can realistically be aiming to f inish at least in the top eight."

Gouffran's recruitment addressed one of the more pressing issues facing Pardew this month following the departure of leading scorer Demba Ba for Chelsea.

Ba's goals have been seriously missed - the Magpies have scored only twice in the four games they have played since the Senegal international headed for Stamford Bridge - and with Papiss Cisse struggling for form, greater potency was a must as the manager drew up his wish-list.

Having seen QPR counterpart Harry Redknapp gazump him to land first-choice frontman Loic Remy, Pardew will be relieved to have finally got a forward in, and the newcomer is confident he can be a hit on Tyneside.

Asked what qualities he will bring to the club, Gouffran said: "Speed. I am fast and I score goals."

Ba's return of 29 goals in his 18 months at St James' will be a hard act to follow, but Frenchman Gouffran is far from daunted by the task of attempting to follow in his foot steps and form a partnership with Cisse.

He said: "There's not really any added pressure. Yes, I am an attacker; yes, I want to score goals. But we [he and Ba] both have different styles of play.

"I don't really think it's fair to draw any comparisons between both of us. Each player has his own style. Each to his own.

"Papiss Cisse and I played against each other when he was at Metz in France, and he is someone who has really made a lot of progress here at Newcastle and he has scored some great goals. I had a chat with him this morning for the first time. We get on really well. He's a great guy and I have no worries that we can definitely play together well."

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa admits he shunned other offers to link up with Newcastle

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa: Confident he made the right decision in linking up with Newca

The highly-rated centre-half has joined the growing ranks of French talent at St James' Park, with a move from Montpellier wrapped up on Tuesday.

As an international performer and Ligue 1 title winner, there was no shortage of interest in Yanga-Mbiwa heading into the winter transfer window.

He concedes that he could have tried his luck elsewhere, but believes Newcastle will provide him with the perfect platform on which to shine in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old defender said: "There were other offers, but it was Newcastle who showed the greatest interest in signing me.

"The fact there are so many French people here, and the fact the club showed their willingness to really support me and help me settle, was very important."

Yanga-Mbiwa also believes that he has joined a club looking upwards, rather than over their shoulder.

Despite linking up with Newcastle with the club languishing just two points above the relegation z one, he added: "I don't have any ideas or thoughts about relegation in my head. I believe that is not going to happen.

"I know where we are, I know our position in the league and it's not where this club should be. So it is a big challenge and we must move as fast as we can out of the relegation zone.

"I want us to be in a good position in the league and why not reach the Champions League as well and have some success in the Europa League."

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce hopes Dan Potts' head injury is not serious

Dan Potts: Suffered a head injury in 5-1 defeat to Arsenal

There was a lengthy lull in play in the second half of the Premier League clash as substitute Potts received treatment on the pitch after a collision left him unconscious on the ground, with 12 minutes' injury time subsequently added.

Allardyce says the 18-year-old will be kept under observation after being stretchered from the pitch and taken to hospital.

He told Sky Sports: "He's not good. He's been taken to hospital to keep him under observation.

"Hopefully it's just a concussion and nothing more than that. Hopefully it's no more severe than that.

"Obviously he didn't really know where he was. He had a bad bang on the head to start with and landed with his head hitting the ground."

Turning his attention to the disappointing result at Emirates Stadium, Allardyce admitted West Ham were undone by a scintillating 10 minutes from Arsenal in the second half during which they scored four goals.

The manager said: "Unfortun ately for us there was 10 minutes of brilliance from Arsenal that we couldn't compete with and that 10 minutes of brilliance brought four very good goals and that was the game done and dusted.

"After that for us it was really about making sure we didn't concede any more than that."

Allardyce added: "Those 10 minutes they blew us out of the water and you have to hold your hands up - they were brilliant.

"It's one of those things when you come here. You hope you can play your very best but when Arsenal are on their best form it's very difficult to get a result."

Arsene Wenger hails improvement of Arsenal's summer signings after 5-1 win

Arsene Wenger: Pleased with the improving Giroud, Podolski and Cazorla

Olivier Giroud scored twice as the Gunners secured four goals in 10 second-half minutes, while fellow summer signings Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla were both on target, with the former also contributing some superb assists.

Wenger admits the convincing win was needed after back-to-back league defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea and was especially pleased with the efforts of his trio of summer acquisitions.

He told Sky Sports: "They are doing better and better. Podolski had a great goal and some great assists.

"Giroud is getting better and of course Cazorla, we know about him."

The manager added: "I believe overall we played very well for 90 minutes. In the space of 10 minutes we killed the game.

"If you look at the home games we have scored many goals in many games. Sometimes we've been stuttering but tonight it went well and we scored some great goals."

The win cements Arsenal's spot in sixth place in the table and Wen ger hopes they can carry their form from Wednesday night into the rest of the season.

He said: "There's a big resolve in the team and I believe there's quality to come out, and hopefully we'll maintain that until the end of the season."

Beckham has Chelsea trial

David Beckham: Eldest son (l) has trial with Chelsea

The 13-year-old trained at Chelsea's Cobham training ground on Tuesday.

Former England captain Beckham is currently without a club after leaving Los Angeles Galaxy at the end of the Major League Soccer season and was pictured on Twitter at the Blues' Surrey training base.

His attendance for the under-14 fixture at the home of the 2011-2012 Champions League winners will undoubtedly lead to speculation Brooklyn Beckham is in line to follow in his father's footsteps to play football at the highest level.

Yet David Beckham and his wife Victoria, the Spice Girl-turned-fashion designer, would be reluctant to heap pressure on any of their four children.

The 37-year-old Londoner has enjoyed a successful career with Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy and AC Milan, while also accumulating 115 England caps, a record for an outfield player.

Beckham also played a prominent role in the delegation sent to Singapore which helped to secure th e 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games for London.

It is still to be determined whether, and where, David Beckham will continue his own footballing career.

Michu signs new Swansea deal

Michu: New four-year contract

The 26-year-old forward has taken the Premier League by storm since joining from Rayo Vallecano for just 2million in the summer, scoring 13 top-flight goals so far this term.

His exploits had seen the Spaniard linked with a big-money move away from the Swans, but he has penned a deal to keep him in south Wales until 2016.

He told the official club website: "It was an easy decision for me. I am living a dream here at Swansea."

Wenger rues missed opportunity

Arsene Wenger: Feels he will rue the one that got away

Wenger's name became synonymous with success during his early years at Arsenal, but the Gunners are no longer considered realistic title challengers and they have not won a trophy of any kind in seven-and-a-half years.

The north London club welcome West Ham to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night knowing defeat will leave them seven points off fourth-place Tottenham and some 22 points behind their former arch rivals and current league leaders Manchester United.

Despite their domination of the league, United have looked a pale imitation of Sir Alex Ferguson's former teams while despite their lavish spending, second-place Manchester City have also failed to reproduce the level of form they showed last season.

And after watching Tottenham batter Manchester United on Sunday and emerge with a draw, Wenger reflected on the fall in standards that he thinks Arsenal could have took advantage of this season.

"I saw Tottenham v Manchester United a nd you think (about) the difference between us and Manchester United when you see them play...," Wenger said.

"It was a fantastic opportunity (to win the league) this season. To catch Manchester United now is out of sight at the moment.

"We have to get closer to the people in front of us first before we can think that. Man United is far but there is no untouchable team in the country at the moment. That is for sure.

"It should not be difficult (to get in the top four) but it will be tough"

Key to Wenger's struggles, of course, has been the departure of Robin van Persie, who has had no problem repeating his superb form last season with his new employers at Old Trafford.

Arsenal's inconsistency has also been a major problem. Gunners fans have been put through a roller coaster of a season so far. The highs of putting seven past Reading and then Newcastle have been outweighed by the low points - home defeats to City, Swansea and Chelsea, not to mention the embarrassing Capital One Cup exit to npower League Two side Bradford.

Theo Walcott, who last week put an end to speculation about his future by signing a contract extension, said there is a lack of self-belief in the Arsenal camp and his manager concurs.

"I agree with him," Wenger said. "The players come out and think 'we could have done better'.

"But when you look at the first half (against Chelsea on Sunday) we lost goals we shouldn't lose, 50/50s you cannot lose in big games.

"You can say what you want but you have to go with a mentality in big games based on belief and total commitment.

"Last year we could win big games and on Sunday you come out of the game and think 'what is happening?"'

Wenger, therefore, thinks it his time his players to stand up and be counted.

"We want to challenge for the championship and therefore I feel now until the end of the season we have to really stand up and show our strength a nd character," the 62-year-old said.

"Last season we came from further behind and finished third but Chelsea are a bit away from us now. But the difference in points (between Arsenal and Tottenham) mathematically is not dramatic."

Wenger confirmed this morning that he hopes to sign two players before the transfer window shuts. Mikel Arteta and Francis Coquelin are out injured, while Abou Diaby has just returned from a long-term thigh injury.

A defensive midfielder could therefore be a priority for Wenger, who professed his admiration for West Ham player Mohamed Diame.

"He has a great presence in the games. I've seen him in games where he's had a big impact," Wenger said of the former Wigan man.

"They have many players who can be dangerous, but he can drive the midfield."

Newcastle sign Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from Montpellier on five-and-a-half-year deal

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa: Newcastle's new signing from Montpellier

The 23-year-old France international has put pen to paper after passing a medical on Tyneside and agreeing personal terms.

Yanga-Mbiwa, who will reportedly cost Newcastle around 7million, told the club's official website: "It is an honour to be able to come to Newcastle United and have the chance to play in the Premier League.

"Newcastle are one of the biggest clubs in the league, and I'm going to try and give everything I have so that the team can do well.

"I have experienced a lot of positive things so far in my career and one of those is joining this club."

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew added: "We needed to strengthen the team and bringing in Mapou will give the whole squad a boost. He is precisely the sort of player we've been looking to bring to the club.

"He is a good age for us but has plenty of experience at club and international level.

"Mapou is a talented footballer, good in the air and on the ground and has all th e attributes to succeed as a quality defender in the Premier League.

"He's a good character too and that will be important for us over the next few months."

Yanga-Mbiwa, who will wear the No 13 shirt, is the first of what is likely to be a quarter of arrivals at Newcastle this week from French clubs, as Nancy full-back Massaido Haidara and Bordeaux striker Yoan Gouffran are close to signing.

Hopes are also high that Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko can be persuaded to move to St James' Park.

The 22-year-old was left out of the squad for Toulouse's scheduled Coupe de France clash with Paris St Germain on Wednesday night.

Ryan Nelsen will play his last game for QPR at home to Manchester City next week

Ryan Nelsen: Will play his last game for QPR against Manchester City on January

The 35-year-old central defender was given his new job on 8 January and QPR fans have been waiting to hear when he will depart for Canada.

The New Zealand international, who moved to west London from Tottenham last summer, will make his final appearance for the Premier League's bottom side at home to Manchester City next Tuesday.

The news is a blow to QPR's hopes of retaining their Premier League status, with Nelsen having been one of their outstanding performers this season.

Upon learning Nelsen was to depart at some stage, QPR boss Harry Redknapp said: "The longer he's here, the better for us, because he's a fantastic player, a great person and a top professional.

"We need him around as long as we possibly can, so hopefully we can keep him for most of the season."

But after Saturday's 1-1 draw at West Ham, Redknapp said: "We're going to lose him unfortunately."

Toronto FC have never reached the Major League Soccer play-offs and finished with a franchise-worst 5-21-8 record last season.

They have already begun their pre-season training camp and their 2013 season kicks off at Vancouver on 2 March.

Wearing a Toronto tracksuit top, he said of his change in roles: "I just love it. It's where my head's been for a few years now. You love everything about football but playing I didn't really enjoy so much as coaching. When that was happening, I knew it was time."

Big Sam set for Diarra dialogue

Alou Diarra: Short of playing time at West Ham

The 31-year-old was brought in from Marseille following the Hammers' promotion but has struggled with injury, making just five appearances in all competitions.

That lack of football has clearly left Diarra frustrated, leading him to tell L'Equipe he is ready to leave east London, saying: "I have wasted my time".

The France international claims he was sold false promises when he joined the club and that he has a non-existent relationship with manager Allardyce.

"He is obviously clear, without telling me, that he is not happy with he situation, which is understandable," the West Ham boss said.

"You get this all the time as a manager when you bring a player of his experience and calibre over from France.

"It hasn't quite worked out and he feels a little disgruntled in terms of playing more, this or that.

"It is a fact of life, whereas I look at the situation and play what I consider the best team and because of Alou's long-stand ing injury he has found it hard to adjust to what is needed in the Premier League.

"If he is unhappy, he just has to tell me what he wants to do and we'll see how we go from there.

"At the moment, yes, he contributed well but his frustrations he obviously wants to play more.

"We'll have that discussions and we'll make a decision after that on the future of Alou."

Rickie Lambert wanted Southampton win in Mauricio Pochettino's first game

Lambert himself was to blame for missing two good chances in a forgettable 0-0 draw with Everton at St Mary's on Monday night.

And the striker was annoyed after a recent run of good form under former Southampton boss Nigel Adkins, who was sacked last Friday and succeeded by Pochettino.

"It was a good point but it's disappointing not to get all three," Lambert told Sky Sports.

"Especially in the first half, we played some really good football and I should have put at least one, maybe two away.

"I'm disappointed not to put one in the back of the net but we played well defensively and that's positive.

"Everything I've seemed to touch has gone in lately but today it wasn't to be. I was still hoping to get a chance in the second half but it didn't come."

Meanwhile, midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin admitted Southampton still did not know much about Pochettino.

But they will now go to Barcelona on a training camp where that can ch ange.

"I think he's been great," he said. "In the next couple of weeks we will get to know him better. Now we go away for a couple of days to get to know him and what he really wants from us."

Everton manager David Moyes accepts draw with Southampton was fair result

However, the Scot was disappointed in the visitors' first-half display - although he paid tribute to Southampton and their former manager Nigel Adkins, who was sacked last week.

"After the way we played in the first half, I was frustrated," he said

"In the second half, we got good opportunities but we couldn't nick a goal.

"We didn't play well and Southampton have been playing well. I've been to see them a couple of times and they continued that form, particularly in the first half.

"I've got to say I thought their team did really well. I give Nigel (Adkins) a lot of credit. I saw his team play at Chelsea and they were excellent.

"Now there's a new manager (Mauricio Pochettino) taking over the reins and they've played well."

Gerrard: Suarez changes on pitch

Luis Suarez: Changes when on the pitch, says Gerrard

The Uruguay international scored his 20th goal of the season - the first Reds player to do so since Fernando Torres in 2009-10 - in the weekend's 5-0 win over Norwich.

Suarez, who turns 26 on Thursday, has become a talisman for the side, easing the burden on Gerrard who has carried the club for the best part of a decade.

Suarez has attracted his fair share of criticism after a race row with Patrice Evra and admitting diving to try to win a penalty.

But Gerrard believes the general portrayal of his team-mate is often inaccurate, although he accepts when it comes to playing football Suarez has only one aim and that is to win.

"He is very quiet in the dressing room and around the place," said the England captain. "He is a family man: every time you ask him what he is doing he is with his family.

"When he comes onto the pitch, he turns into a fighter, he turns into a winner."

Gerrard said on Sunday that Suarez deserved to play in the Champions League but could not say whether not qualifying would result in the Uruguayan being lured away by other clubs.

With Liverpool seven points adrift of fourth place their chances of re-joining Europe's elite club competition may have to wait until at least next season.

But the Reds captain was in no doubt Suarez was integral to the Merseysiders' chances of success in the future.

"I think he is world class. He has everything and we are very lucky to have him in our team and at our club," said the midfielder, speaking at a Football Writers' Association gala tribute dinner in his honour.

"We want him to stay for a long time. If Liverpool are going to be successful in years to come Luis Suarez will be a big part of that.

"When you are trying to achieve these big prizes against top players and top sides in the league Luis Suarez is someone you want in your team."

Suarez is only two goals behind Manchester United striker Robin van Persie (18) in the running for the Premier League top scorer and Gerrard believes he should also be in contention for the player of the year award.

"I certainly hope so, he deserves that accolade," said the 32-year-old. "I'd go as far as to say he's probably the best player I've played with, which is some accolade considering the players I've played with - some fantastic players.

"I've played with world-class players - Fernando Torres, Jamie Carragher, Gary McAllister - but Luis Suarez is probably top of that pile."

Manager Brendan Rodgers is looking to bolster his squad before the end of the transfer window, although he does not have the finances to bring in anyone who could remotely be regarded as world-class.

He is interested Inter Milan midfielder Philippe Coutinho, a 20-year-old Brazil international, and discussions have taken place with the Serie A club.

Rodgers has also been linked with a bid for Ajaccio's Mexican goalkeeper Guil lermo Ochoa as speculation over the future of Jose Reina - currently sidelined with a thigh injury - continues.

With Barcelona's Victor Valdes saying he will not sign a new contract with the Catalans when his current deal expires next year Reina is being linked with a return to his former club.

Reina's father Miguel was also played in goal for Barcelona before moving to Atletico Madrid and he said the 30-year-old would be an ideal replacement for Valdes.

"Pepe has sufficiently shown his standing as a goalkeeper and I would even say I think he would be the ideal goalkeeper for Barcelona without a doubt," Miguel Reina, who himself was a former goalkeeper with Barca, Atletico Madrid and Spain, was quoted as telling Catalan broadcasters La Xarxa.

"I'm absolutely convinced that Pepe would be more than happy to return to Barcelona.

"For me I would love to see Pepe at Barca again. What father wouldn't like to see his son playing at Barca? He's alr eady done that but to return would be extraordinary. "

Southampton add three to coaching staff as Mauricio Pochettino makes his mark

Mauricio Pochettino: Putting together his backroom staff

Jesus Perez, Miguel D'Agostino and Toni Jimenez, who previously worked with Pochettino at Espanyol, will join him at St Mary's.

The move sees Andy Crosby, Dean Wilkins and Jim Stannard leave the club, with the new trio supporting Fran Alonso, after he was named first team technical support coach last year.

Perez becomes Assistant Manager having previously worked as a technical coach under Pochettino in Spain.

D'Agostino has been confirmed as first team coach, while Jimenez becomes the goalkeeping coach.

"Southampton Football Club can confirm the appointment of Jesus Perez, Miguel D'Agostino and Toni Jimenez to the club's first team management staff," read a statement on the club's official website.

"Andy Crosby, Dean Wilkins and Jim Stannard have been relieved of their coaching duties, and we thank them for their service during their respective periods with the club."

Reading boss Brian McDermott will not be spending big during winter window

Brian McDermott: Will not be breaking the bank during winter window

The Royals are in need of fresh faces, with life in the Premier League testing them to the full.

McDermott's men are only a point away from clambering out of the drop zone, but appreciate that an injection of experience and talent in January would aid their cause considerably.

A number of high-profile figures have been linked with moves to the Madejski Stadium, with it suggested that Reading are prepared to spend big in pursuit of top-flight survival.

McDermott, though, has sought to distance himself from the endless rounds of rumours, with the Royals boss conceding that he remains in the market for bargains.

"We will not be doing 5million deals - the club has never done that," he said.

"It's the team unity that's helped me over the last three years.

"I've never had money, so if you don't have it, you can't spend it and you have to find another way. It doesn't have to be splashing loads of money at it - just don't tel l the chairman that."

Steven Gerrard wants Liverpool to finish in top four to convince Luis Suarez

Steven Gerrard: Claims Luis Suarez is the best player he has played with

Despite sticking by Suarez through some difficult times, Liverpool risk losing the Uruguayan in the summer if they cannot deliver UEFA Champions League football.

And the Reds skipper is urging his team-mates to meet the ambitions of their star striker by fighting their way up the table.

"Hopefully, we can put a fight on for him between now and the end of the season to finish fourth and we make a decision for him," said Gerrard, quoted in The Sun.

"Only he knows what his ambitions and dreams are. Luis deserves to be in the Champions League - everyone has to admit that.

"Outside of Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, I'll argue he's as good as anyone else.

"He's probably the best player I've played with and I've played with some top players in my career."

Gerrard Liverpool's 'best ever'

Steven Gerrard: Liverpool's top man, according to Carragher

The 32-year-old midfielder collected the prestigious accolade from Football Writers' chairman Andy Dunn, of the Sunday Mirror, at a gala dinner in London on Sunday.

Tributes were paid by former manager Gerard Houllier, who brought Gerrard into the Liverpool first team as a raw youngster, and his long-serving team-mate Carragher, while former Reds boss Kenny Dalglish also passed on his congratulations as he was unable to attend.

Carragher is in no doubt of Gerrard's place among Anfield legends.

"I think we are in the presence of the greatest player ever to play for Liverpool," said Carragher.

"People will say I am biased because we are good friends and because of the trophies we have won together, but it is a fair accolade to give him.

"There are guys like Kenny [Dalglish], Graeme Souness, Ian Rush, all world-class players, but the difference was they were in a world-class team - and Stevie has not played in a world-class team."

Carragher added: "Stevie's one strength is he has no weakness, he can run, tackle pass and score goals.

"Football is a team game, but special players do special things at special times, and that is Steven Gerrard."

Former Liverpool striker Rush and England manager Roy Hodgson were among the guests at The Savoy, along with current Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

Gerrard, 32, was voted FWA Footballer of the Year in 2009 and was touched to have been recognised for his achievements once again.

"Tonight's award means a lot because these guys have followed me throughout my career, written about me whenever I have played," he said. "To receive this award from the Football Writers' Association is a very proud night for myself and my family. I feel very flattered and humbled to receive it.

"I have always looked at personal awards a bit of a bonus really. I always try to achieve things with Liverpool or fight to do well for England.

"But when you talk about awards of people like the supporters or people in the press who watch you week in and week out, scrutinise your performances, these mean an awful lot because these guys know their football."

Gerrard has played in every minute of all of Liverpool's Barclays Premier League matches this season, scoring in yesterday's 5-0 demolition of Norwich at Anfield, which saw the Reds move a small step closer to the top four.

The veteran midfielder has also now chalked up 100 international caps as he looks to lead Hodgson's team on through to qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

"It is a special year - the 150th anniversary for the FA as well, so there are some really big fixtures to look forwards to," Gerrard added.

"We are halfway through a World Cup qualifying campaign, so hopefully at the end of the season it can be a success for Liverpool to achieve something, and also make it through to the finals in Brazil with England."

Sir Alex Ferguson blasts assistant referee after Manchester United held by Spurs

Manchester United looked to be heading for three Premier League points when Robin van Persie scored before the break but Clint Dempsey found a stoppage-time equaliser to deny Ferguson's men.

And the United boss was not only convinced that Wayne Rooney was denied a second-half penalty but also blamed the assistant referee for not giving anything his side's way.

"The stand-side linesman never gave us a thing all day," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "For me, it was a poor performance by him.

"Why he never saw the penalty kick on Wayne Rooney and some of the other decisions...

"We remember him well from the Chelsea game (last season) when (Didier) Drogba was three yards offside and he gave him onside.

"I think he had a shocking game today. I'm disappointed in his performance, I really am. I think he had a bad game."

But Ferguson did reserve some praise for Spurs as the home team bombarded the United goal after the break.

" You're 1-0 up with a minute to go and we're comfortable at that stage," he added.

"But Tottenham have worked their socks off and you have to give them credit. You can't deny them a point because they've worked ever so hard for it.

"We'd got used to them pumping balls into the box. You'd have thought we'd have dealt with it better.

"And on the counter attack we should have finished them off. It was the final ball letting us down and we should have been better than that."

Ashley Cole set to sign new Chelsea contract this week, Rafael Benitez confirms

Ashley Cole: Will sign new contract in the coming days, says Rafael Benitez

The England left-back, whose contract at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of the season, had been linked with moves away to Real Madrid and Paris St Germain.

Sky Sports had revealed that the 32-year-old was set to sign a new one-year deal, and Benitez confirmed that only the formalities now need to be completed.

"I am really pleased, the paperwork has to be done but the agreement is there," he said.

Cole, who joined the Blues in 2006 from Arsenal, was part of the team that beat Bayern Munich to win last year's UEFA Champions League final, and he has also won one Premier League title, four FA Cups and a League Cup with Chelsea.

Team-mate Frank Lampard is also out of contract at the end of this campaign and looks set to depart the West London club.

Benitez said the 34-year-old midfielder is "doing a great job... he is playing well," but stressed "it is not my decision" to extend his stay at the club.

Clint Dempsey finds a late equaliser for Tottenham against Manchester United

Clint Dempsey celebrates his last-gasp goal as Spurs snatch a 1-1 draw with Manc

Robin van Persie had looked to have claimed all three points with his first-half header at White Hart Lane on Sunday but Dempsey swept the ball home in stoppage time to salvage a point.

The adverse weather conditions had threatened to see the Premier League clash at White Hart Lane called off - and Spurs fans were soon left wishing it had.

After a cautious start in which Aaron Lennon forced a save from David de Gea, it was ex-Arsenal man Van Persie who opened the scoring by heading home Tom Cleverley's right-wing cross.

It was the culmination of a flowing move from the Red Devils after good work from Michael Carrick, Shinji Kagawa and Danny Welbeck, who was selected ahead of Wayne Rooney in attack.

The home side struggled to create outright chances until De Gea produced a superb reaction stop with his legs to deny Gareth Bale's deflected effort from the edge of the box just before the break.

And De Gea was called into action once again after the interval when he came up with a reflex save to keep out the advancing Dempsey from point-blank range.

The Spanish goalkeeper then pushed away another Dempsey shot shortly afterwards as Spurs pushed hard for an equaliser and the crowd got behind their team.

But United remained a threat on the break and Rooney had a strong shout for a penalty shortly after replacing Kagawa when he went down under a challenge from Steven Caulker.

It was still Andre Villas-Boas' side asking most of the questions and it required a last-ditch block from Rio Ferdinand to prevent Jermain Defoe levelling things up after getting away in the channel.

But just when Sir Alex Ferguson's team looked to have held on for the win, De Gea could only punch a cross as far as Lennon inside the area and he returned the ball to Dempsey to stun United.

West Brom manager Steve Clarke on the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa

Steve Clarke: Pleased with the comeback against Villa

The Baggies trailed their visitors 2-0 at half-time after goals from Christian Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor, but a marked improvement in the second period saw Clarke's men earn a point through Chris Brunt and Peter Odemwingie.

Clarke said afterwards: "I'm not sure relief was the emotion. The emotion was disappointing at the way we played in the first half.

"We knew Villa are a dangerous team but we didn't show our qualities in the first half. We didn't pass the ball like we can and it was nice to get in at half-time and regroup.

"The second half was much improved and there was a little bit of pride at the way we played."

On rumours Odemwingie will leave the club in the January transfer window, Clarke added: "No-one is going out in January. We don't need to sell anyone.

"Will he move if there is a silly offer? You don't know our chairman (Jeremy Peace). No-one is going out. The quicker we get to February 1 the better. No-one is com ing in and no-one is going out."
